Intrathecal Catheterization

As a preclinical research surgeon, one of my specialties is intrathecal catheterization of the lumbar spine. Indwelling catheters allow for serial dosing of test article, as well as CSF collection, in a manner that is minimally invasive. Historically, catheter patency rates have been a point of concern. Catheters may stop functioning for a variety of reasons, including fibroses at the catheter tip, kinking along the length of the catheter, and blood entering the catheter and coagulating. Weekly flushing of the catheter can prevent some of these issues but not all.
I have discovered a variety of techniques that have greatly increased catheter patency, and improved study success rates. Many of the adaptations I have made are changes to surgical technique, as well as changes to the type of catheter used.
I hope to publish this work in the near future. For now, contact me with any questions about this process.
